What is PICSI & ICSI

PICSI treatment is a new micro-manipulative technique for identifying healthy, functional sperm for injection into mature egg, improving the chances of successful fertilization and also reduces the miscarriage risk.

How does PICSI influence IVF success rates?

PICSI success rates are approximately 20% more because it enables us to select and introduce a sperm to the oocyte based on its functional quality. This method works on the same principle by which sperms are selected in a woman’s body during the natural fertilization process. Hence, IVF with PICSI is ideal in certain cases.

  • ICSI means injection of the sperm into the middle of the egg.
  • ICSI fertility treatment is an effective method to fertilize the egg.

As with IVF, the ovaries are first stimulated by injections and eggs are retrieved. IVF with ICSI treatment involves the use of specialised micro-manipulator and an inverted microscope that enables embryologists to pick up individual sperms in a tiny specially designed hollow ICSI needle. The needle is then carefully advanced through the outer shell of the egg and egg membrane and the sperm is then injected into the inner part (cytoplasm) of the egg. This specialised procedure needs great deal of expertise and our dedicated fertility centre or ICSI centre can bring you great results.

PICSI / ICSI FAQ's

What's the difference between IVF and ICSI?

The key difference between IVF and ICSI is how the sperm fertilises the egg. In IVF, the egg and sperm (of which there are multiple) are left in a petri dish to fertilise on their own. In ICSI, one sperm is directly injected into the egg.

How long does ICSI take?

One cycle of ICSI takes between four weeks and six weeks to complete. You and your partner can expect to spend a half-day at the clinic for the egg and sperm retrieval procedures. You will usually be asked to go back between two days and five days later for the embryo transfer procedure.

How sperm is selected for ICSI?

Initially, a sperm sample is prepared using multiple techniques in order to eliminate poor-quality sperm. The remaining specimen of “healthy” sperm is then placed under high-magnification for visual inspection by an embryologist. The embryologist will select the “best looking” sperm using a fine glass needle.

Does ICSI damage the egg?

A small number of eggs – usually less than 5 percent – can be damaged as a result of the needle insertion

Is ICSI procedure painful?

ICSI procedures could cause a little pain to the patient by doing needle aspiration and injection. The egg retrieval process is painless because the anesthesiologist will use anesthesia and sedation medication.

Does sperm quality affect ICSI success?

Individual sperm morphology assessed at the moment of ICSI does not seem to affect the fertilization rate or embryo development. However, the implantation rate was significantly lower when only embryos resulting from the injection of an abnormal spermatozoon were available.

Is 1 million sperm enough for IVF?

If the total motile sperm count is below 1 to 5 million, success is unlikely. Therefore, in vitro fertilization with ICSI (injecting sperm into eggs) is usually done for couples with sperm numbers this low.

Is PICSI better than ICSI?

In a study comparing PICSI to ICSI using sibling oocytes, PICSI resulted in significantly higher fertilization rates (82.2% vs 70.5%), transfer-eligible embryo rates (51.1% vs. 38.1%), and a greater number of high-quality embryos, compared to ICSI.

What is intra cytoplasmic sperm injection?

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is an infertility treatment. It involves injecting live sperm into a person's eggs in a laboratory. This procedure can create an embryo (fertilized egg).

Which technique is used for intra cytoplasmic sperm injection?

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a technique used during in vitro fertilization (IVF) where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg for the purpose of fertilization.
