• What is an HSG?

An HSG is a test to check whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked. It also allows us to see the contour of the uterus.

• When can it be done?

HSG should be done before day 10 from the start of your periods. Usually, it is advised between days 5 and 10 of the cycle, once your periods have stopped. We usually book an appointment for you on day 7 or 8.

• How is the procedure done?

This is an X Ray test. You will be made to lie down in the same position as when you had a transvaginal scan. A speculum will be inserted gently into the vagina and the cervix visualized. A soft catheter is inserted into the cervix and dye is pushed in gently. Filling of the dye within the uterus outlines the cavity and subsequent spill of the dye through the tubes confirms that the tubes are open.

• When is the test considered abnormal?

The test is said to be abnormal if the tubes on one side or both sides are blocked. Sometimes, we can see an abnormal uterine cavity too. Occasionally, the dye will collect within the tube without spillage – revealing a hydrosalpinx.

• Is it a painful procedure?

The test can cause discomfort and cramps, but these are usually well tolerated. If you are concerned about pain, please take an oral painkiller (diclofenac/ibuprofen) two hours before the procedure.

You need not fast before the procedure.

• How long will the procedure take?

The procedure will take about 15 – 30 minutes.

• What can I expect after the procedure?

You will have some watery discharge which may be a little blood stained. So please take a sanitary towel with you to use after the procedure.

Avoid the use of tampons after the procedure

You may feel a bit dizzy soon after the procedure. These symptoms settle in a short while after the completion of the procedure.

• Are there any risks?

It is a safe procedure. If you have allergy to iodine, please inform the specialist.

Infection is a rare risk. If you develop fever with abdominal pain after the procedure, please get in touch with your doctor. This may signify infection which will need a course of antibiotics.

• When will the result be available?

The results will be available soon after the procedure. The doctor performing the procedure will tell you the results immediately. Please collect the X Ray film and the report before you leave the centre.

• How soon can I try for a baby after the procedure?

You can begin trying for a baby in the same cycle. There is no need to postpone attempting pregnancy.
