What is semen analysis?

This is a basic test to see if your semen contains the right number of sperms with a good proportion of normal-looking sperms that are able to move rapidly.

When can a semen test be done?

We advise you to avoid intercourse for not longer than 2-3 days before the test.

How is this test done?

First of all, we need you to collect your semen. We will provide you with a clean, sterile, non-toxic container.

Please read the following guidelines before collecting the sample:

If the sample is collected at home, deliver the sample to the laboratory within 30 minutes of collection.

During transport to the laboratory, the sample should be kept at 37°C or by bodily contact (trouser pocket).

How is semen analysis done?

• If you are currently taking any medications, please inform the physician prior to collecting your sample.
• Make sure that the container is labeled with your name and your partner’s name, days of abstinence, the date and time of collection.
• First, pass urine before collecting semen.
• Wash your hands and penis thoroughly and rinse well and dry with tissue paper. (Do not use soap).
• Please avoid collection during intercourse as the first part of the semen which contains the maximum number of sperms will be lost.
• Do not use condoms during collection. These contain a substance that will kill sperms. (Only special, non-toxic condoms designed for semen collection can be used).
• The sample should be obtained by masturbation and ejaculated into a clean, wide-mouth sterile container.
• Do not touch the inner portion of the sterile container with hands.
• Do not spill water or urine inside the specimen container.
• Do not spill the sample. Make sure that all the ejaculate is collected into the container.
