THE STORY

From one family's loss to 1,400+ reviews.

1940s

Jayalakshmi

Dr Vani's aunt, her mother's older sister, married a doctor in the 1940s and never had a child of her own. Investigations were rare then and treatment largely inadequate. More than once she asked her younger sister, then a medical student, if she could adopt her first child. That child was Dr Vani. Jayalakshmi died of blood cancer at 34, before Dr Vani was born.

1960

Her sister becomes the doctor

Dr P S Logambal, Jayalakshmi's younger sister, was one of the first women to practise medicine in Karur and has been a gynaecologist there since 1960. She delivered the town's babies for the next six decades. Her daughter is Dr Vani Sundarapandian.

A promise

A career chosen for her

Dr Vani decided young that she would build a fertility centre in her aunt's memory. She trained in obstetrics and gynaecology and reproductive medicine in India, the UK and Australia, and practised in the UK before coming home.

Jananam begins, in Karur

Dr Vani and her husband Dr Selva built a hospital in Karur and named it for her mother. Jananam started inside it. The hospital was later leased to Apollo and is known in Karur as Apollo Loga Hospital.

A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER

Why I started Jananam

The photograph is of Jayalakshmi, my mother's older sister. She married in the 1940s, to a doctor, and never had a child of her own.

Fertility care then was nothing like it is today: investigations were rare, treatment was largely inadequate, and in India, childlessness was treated as a disgrace rather than a medical condition. She carried that weight for the rest of her life, and it brought on serious depression.

More than once, she asked my mother, her younger sister and then a medical student, whether she could adopt my mother's first child. That child was me. My aunt never lived to meet me. She died of blood cancer at 34.

I started Jananam because of her. It exists for the one thing she wanted and never had.

The unhurried consultations we run here, the prices we quote upfront, and the conversation we now have with every patient before their first cycle about when we'll recommend stopping, all of it is what I wish someone could have given her.

About Jananam, quickly.

Who founded Jananam Fertility Centre?

Dr Vani Sundarapandian, MD, DGO, FRCOG (UK), founded Jananam in 2008 and is its Medical Director. She has spent 20 years exclusively in reproductive medicine and practised in the UK before returning to Chennai.

What does "Jananam" mean?

Jananam (ஜனனம்) means birth, which is why our line is 'Where life begins.' It is a reminder of what every consultation, scan and plan here is for.

Is Jananam a hospital or a clinic?

Jananam is a single-speciality fertility centre with a main hospital and IVF lab in Neelankarai, and a clinic in Thiruporur. Egg collection, embryo transfer and all lab work happen at Neelankarai.

Is Jananam a maternity hospital?

No, Jananam is a fertility-only centre and has no maternity ward or delivery unit. After a positive pregnancy test we monitor the early weeks, then refer you to your doctor for the rest of your pregnancy and the birth.

Do you have centres outside India?

No. Both Jananam centres are in Chennai: the main hospital and IVF lab in Neelankarai, and a clinic in Thiruporur. Couples from other countries start with a video consultation and do most tests where they live.

Why don't we see Jananam advertised?

Most couples come to us through reviews and referrals. We'd rather spend on the lab than on billboards.

What is Jananam's IVF success rate?

Jananam doesn't publish a clinic-wide success rate because that figure reflects which patients a clinic accepts more than the care you will get. What helps you is your own prognosis. At your first consultation we go through your age, diagnosis, ovarian reserve and your partner's semen analysis, and tell you the realistic range, including when treatment is unlikely to help.
